Woodies, Trees and Shrubs
Shrubs, trees, and conifers form the backbone of a landscape, creating the feeling of permanence and advancing maturity. Their flowers, leaves, berries, and bark herald the changing seasons.

  • See individual listings for suggested sun, shade, and soil requirements and as well as recommended USDA Hardiness Zones.

  • We ship nicely established, 2- to 3-year-old plants in 2.59 quart/2.45 liter containers, except where indicated in listings.
    More planting info

    Fagus (Copper Beech)
Few if any tree can equal the year round beauty and majesty of a mature specimen Beech! The widely cultivated Common or European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) exhibits an extraordinary wide range of form and color displayed by its foliage. Best appreciated in an open location, the smooth light grey bark is unmatched in its beauty by any other tree. Several forms can be pruned to produce a dense, beautiful hedge.
    >Fagus Varieties

    Fargesia (Bamboo)
Most bamboos thrive in partial shade in moderately acidic loamy soils. Organic matter may be added if soils are less than ideal. Bamboos are forest plants and do best if mulch is kept over the roots and rhizomes. If the bamboo is planted late in the year, one should mulch the plant heavily and provide extra protection from any cold and drying winds. In colder climates where bamboos may be marginal, successful growers usually protect their bamboos through the winter with heavy mulch. Provide ample water to newly planted bamboos. Infrequent or non thorough watering will result in yellowing leaves and/or leaf drop. Bamboos do benefit from fertilization, especially a fertilizer high in Nitrogen, such as found in lawn fertilizers.
    >Fargesia Varieties

    Ginkgo (Maidenhair Tree)
A picturesque deciduous tree, closely related to the conifers, with an ancient history that can be traced back in the fossil record. Ginkgos are easily grown and tolerant of a wide range of conditions, including air pollution. Ginkgos are instantly recognizable by their thick, leathery unique fan-shaped leaves that turn a beautiful yellow in fall. Our selections are desirable male forms with an amazing number of distinct selections that display variable sizes, form, and growth habit with various shaped and colored leaves. Many of the smaller selections are ideal for small home landscapes. Ginkgos are immune from insect and disease predation.
    >Ginkgo Varieties

    Hydrangea (Hydrangea)
Few groups of shrubs create such a floral impact in the landscape from mid to late summer, as do Hydrangeas. They are reliable, easily grown, and tolerant of sun or light shade and can be grown as individual specimens or massed in formal or informal groups. The large bold flowerheads can also be enjoyed indoors in cut arrangements. Bold attractive foliage frequently enhances the floral display and extends seasonal ornamental interest. Two North American native species, the Oakleaf Hydrangea (H. quercifolia) and the Smooth Hydrangea (H. arborescens) are represented by several outstanding selections with the strikingly shaped foliage of the Oakleaf Hydrangea assuming beautiful fall colorations.
    >Hydrangea Varieties

    Magnolia (Magnolia)
Spectacular, often breathtaking floral displays qualify Magnolias as aristocrats of spring landscapes. Their display is guaranteed to improve as years pass. Our offerings represent some of the finest new introductions, many from North American hybridizers. Planting a Magnolia is truly an investment in the future!
    >Magnolia Varieties

Rhododendron and Azalea (Rhododendron and Azalea)
The genus Rhododendron includes both evergreen and deciduous plants, the latter group mainly composed of Azaleas. The early spring display is ornamentally extended by attractive foliage and a pleasing overall form.
    >Rhododendron and Azalea Varieties

    Syringa (Lilac)
Among the most beloved of all flowering shrubs, lilacs evoke positive memories of times past. Noted principally for their early display of intensely fragrant flowers, they can be equally enjoyed in both the garden and in arrangements. Our selections represent both choice classics and the outstanding recent advances in lilac breeding.

    Father Fiala Crabapple or Lilac
For over 40 years Father John Fiala worked as a scholar and plant breeder to enrich the horticultural world. His two great interests were lilacs and crabapples. Also crowning his horticultural achievement, towards the end of his life were two internationally acclaimed books Lilacs- The Genus Syringa and Flowering Crabapples-The Genus Malus. All his remarkable horticultural achievements were accomplished in addition to his professional life as a Parish Priest, High School Principal and College Professor. Father Fiala lilac hybrids set new standards with their improved disease resistant foliage, superb floral features and outstanding form or habit. They were breed to thrive in North America's range of climates and succeed as a component of smaller home gardens.

Song Sparrow offers many of his "Excellent" rated varieties, which is his highest ranked category. Likewise his crabapple introductions are representative of the finest choices for American gardens displaying outstanding floral and fruiting characteristics, excellent disease resistant foliage and pleasing growth habit.

    Japanese and Korean Maple
Japanese Maples are among the most desirable of small, specimen deciduous trees for an open or lightly shaded location. Their foliage exhibits a spectacular and broad range of form and color throughout the growing season. Fall color is especially outstanding, equal to or exceeding the fall effect of any shrub or tree. In addition to the foliage, a wide range of growth forms and textures, plus uniquely colored and textured bark create year-round ornamental interest in home landscapes.
