Excellent habit and heavy flower production. In late spring to early summer, 12-15" long spikes of deep violet purple flowers accented by a yellow keel are borne on all sides of the rounded clump, not just at the top, producing a bigger show of color overall. Secondary flower spikes extend the flowering time into midsummer. Baptisia 'Indigo Spires' forms a densely branched, full and rounded clump of glaucous green foliage that extends far down the stems, leaving little bare stem showing at the base. A substantial perennial that could easily be used in place of a shrub.
Baptisia, also known as False Indigo, has attractive blue-green foliage and ornamental seed pods. A wonderful and long-lived choice for perennial borders, cottage gardens, or mingled with native plants in a meadow or prairie type planting. It is drought tolerant when established, deer resistant, and attracts butterflies. Good for cut flowers.
