Tall, dense, poker-like purple plumes make a strong statement in the garden. Blooms midsummer. Bold, coarsely textured, deeply incised dark green foliage can have bronze tints. A member of Astilbe chinensis (Chinese Astilbe), though garden performance is best in moist soils, members of the Chinese species are moderately more drought tolerant.
Astilbes are long-lived perennials. They prefer rich, organic soil; mulch to keep moisture levels steady. Light shade is ideal for the most flowers. Grow in shady beds and borders and at the edge of a wooded area. Their ferny foliage looks great with broad-leaved Hosta. Astilbe are deer resistant.
