Peonies

Excellent selection of choice Peonies.

Peonies are a beautiful and classic element of the perennial garden. As a cut flower, they have no equal. Fragrant blooms, lush foliage, and a wide range of luminous colors make easy to grow Peonies much loved favorites. We offer for sale a superb selection of Peonies, including many award-winning introductions from the Klehm family.

Use Peonies individually or group them in massed plantings. Plant in rows to create an effective and enchanting low hedge. Include Peonies in mixed plantings with shrubs and other perennials. Their late spring to early summer blooms are irresistible, and their handsome foliage makes a superb backdrop for other flowers throughout the growing season. For longer lasting bouquets, cut when the Peony buds are at the "marshmallow" stage.

How to grow and care for Peonies

For best results, give Peonies a sunny area and well-drained soil. Water as needed during dry periods, although they do have good drought tolerance when established. They are pest and disease resistant, and are not attractive to deer. The Peony is a long term perennial, growing in the same spot for 50 or more years!

Peonies require between 500-1000 winter chilling hours (approx. 3 to 6 weeks), between 32-40 degrees F to flower successfully. Peonies grow in USDA hardiness zones 2-8.

We ship healthy, freshly dug bare root, 2-year-old bare-root Peony plants with 3-5 eyes, field grown on our farm, shipped in the fall, September through November, at the correct planting time for your gardening zone.

Hybridizing credit is listed under variety name.

Hybrids

Hybrid Peonies are the result of crossing or breeding two Peony species together. This progeny has vivid, oriental poppy-like blossom colors of salmon, peach, coral, clear pink, fire-engine red and soft moonlight yellows. They bloom early in the season with shorter bush stature and lighter green vibrant foliage than regular garden peonies. Their planting and care are similar to growing any Peony. Hybrid Peonies are excellent in the mixed perennial border or used in groups around patios, walkways, and pools.

Good for Cut Flowers

Enjoy fresh cut blooms right from the garden! Experiment and have fun: store-bought blooms need to withstand storage and shipping, but home gardeners can use almost any flower for bouquets.

Tips for cut flowers: Cut blooms in the cool of the day. Leave plenty of stems and foliage to nourish the plant for future growth, (cut no more than 1/3 of the plant's growth). Re-cut stems at an angle under water just before putting in a vase. Change water in the vase frequently. Pick both large and small bouquets - even a single flower adds a nice, fresh touch.
